Ionisation smoke detectors use a small amount of radioactive material to ionise the air between two electrodes. As the smoke particles enter the ionisation chamber, they disrupt the flow of ions, triggering the alarm. Ionisation detectors are sensitive to fast-burning, flaming fires with smaller smoke particles.
